In this post, I'll share with you how I did a recent photoshoot, out in downtown High Point, North Carolina.
For a little bit of backstory, this shoot came together at the very last moment. Our model for the day, Tyshan, had been wanting to shoot with us for a while. Originally, I wanted to do a nature-themed shoot around Golden Hour (more about what Golden Hour is in a future post). Well, some unexpected surprises came up and we had to delay the start of our shoot. By this time, it was getting close to 6pm and the sun was almost gone. We were panicking! I had no interest in doing a photoshoot in a park or on a lake when there was no natural light to balance out my flash.
I was driving around High Point, still scouting for locations when I remembered one spot that I had been to in the daytime but had never seen at night. The spot was Center Theater, right in the middle of downtown.
I had no idea what it would look like at night, and I didn't even know if there would even be any lights on. But sometimes, photographers get lucky.
Check out a few of the images from the shoot, and some info about my setup.

The images were all shot with my trusty Canon 5D Mark 1 (Classic!) and my Canon 85mm 1.8 lens. The setup was simple: I had a single flash, my Platinum TTL Speedlight, and my 48in Fotodiox Octagon Softbox. I used the theater light bulbs as my background and it even provided a little bit of a rim light around Tyshan. Here's a quick diagram of the setup for the first picture:
Overall, I think the photo shoot turned out great. We were able to capture some amazing images without being fully prepared. Shoutout to our model Tyshan for braving the cold weather and rushed time schedule, and shoutout to my assistant Jordan for aiding me along the way.
